Welcome Address

General Konstantinos Floros,

As the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the Delegations of the countries participating in the 54th World Military Sailing Championship of the International Military Sports Council, which will take place in Greece from the 7th to the 15th of June 2023.

The Hellenic seas are eagerly awaiting our military sailors as they are getting ready to unfurl their sails, having in mind that the region has been a hub of maritime excellence for over 10,000 years, with the ancient Greeks laying the foundations of a remarkable maritime history. In fact, it was in the waters of the Saronic Bay where the legendary Athenian triremes sailed to victory in the naval battle of Salamis, over two and a half thousand years ago.

The Hellenic National Defence General Staff wholeheartedly supported the proposal of our National Delegation to CISM for hosting the 54th CISM World Military Sailing Championship, and in this context I would like to express my gratitude to all the entities and the numerous individuals backing up this whole effort, ensuring the success of such an important event.

Last but not least, I would like to extend my best wishes to all the military athletes participating in the 54th World Military Sailing Championship, being confident that the competition will be conducted in accordance with the principles and values upheld by CISM.

Andriopoulos_welcome address

Captain Spyridon Andriopoulos HN, Chief of the Greek Delegation to CISM.

It is with great pleasure and honor for the Hellenic Armed Forces to host the 54th World Military Sailing Championship of 2023 in Greece. After the cancellation of the CISM sport activities during the pandemic, the re – undertaken of this event was set as a primary goal for the Greek Delegation to CISM.

Sailing, as a nautical discipline, is so interwoven with the Hellenic naval tradition, since the ancient years in Greece. It is a significant challenge for us, as the successors of this naval legacy, to highlight the close relationship of humans with the sea, especially military people.

The Port of Piraeus, lying about 10 kilometers southwest of Athens, is a strategically important location because of its proximity to the Aegean Sea and is linked by shipping routes to Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Designed by Greek architect Hippodamus in the 5th century BC, it remained one of the most prosperous ports of Greece and Europe for a long time.

With my welcoming address, I would like to express my gratitude to the CISM Member Nations that will be present in this year’s World Military Sailing Championship in Greece. We are looking forward to hosting the representative missions and experiencing unforgettable sailing moments in the sea of Piraeus.

The Greek Delegation to CISM wishes to all the participants to have a nice stay in Greece. From our side we will do our best to provide you an excellent organization and give you the opportunity to taste the Greek hospitalization (Filoxenia)!
